Riverwalk Ball Fields and Batting Cages

Another fabulous playground in Thornton, this time at the Riverwalk Ball Fields and Batting Cages. As a 2019 Starburst Award recipient, the entire park boasts lighted baseball and softball fields, a large pavilion, batting cages, and a new playground.

The history of the park dates back to when the Riverwalk development was originally approved in 1992. The development was designed to include open space along the South Platte River as well as residential, office, and retail uses. In 1998, the first phase of the project which included the ball fields and batting cages was completed. Since then, the park has been a popular spot for both locals and visitors alike.

Some of the special events that are held at the park include the Winter Wonderland Holiday Celebration, 4th of July Celebration, and Movie in the Park Series. The Winter Wonderland Holiday Celebration features an ice skating show, Santa visits, photos with Santa, holiday music, and more. The 4th of July Celebration includes a free concert by the City Band, food vendors, and a spectacular firework show over the South Platte River. Lastly, the Movie in the Park Series shows family-friendly movies on a large inflatable screen.

It is also a place where they can learn about the history of Thornton, Adams County, CO, and the South Platte River. Throughout the year, the Riverwalk Ball Fields and Batting Cages host a variety of special events. Some of these include movie nights, concerts, holiday celebrations, and more.

One of the best things about this park is that it is open year-round. In the winter, the fields are transformed into an outdoor ice skating rink. And during the summer months, there is a water sprayground to cool off in.There is a very nice bathroom facility available in the park. The playground equipment is all ADA accessible and includes slides, swings and so much more.

There are even a couple of canopies providing shade over the play structure, however, the slides are uncovered and can get hot. You will also find a very large pavilion with picnic tables, great for a break or picnic lunch. This is a fantastic playground for a wide range of ages. There are elements designed for younger children and ones that will challenge your older children as well. You will find accessible chair swings instead of the traditional baby swings and this “alien home” for imaginative fun. The most unique feature of the Riverwalk playground in Thornton is the Disc Net Climber. You will love watching the kids climb up through the disc holes or if they’re a bit older, they can climb up on the outside.

Another unique feature that made Riverwalk Ball Fields and Batting Cages an instant favorite with children is a scavenger hunt. There are six animal tracks hidden in the playground to find. Lastly, there are many nature-inspired elements at Riverwalk Park. Wooden ladders, logs and toadstools, and a wobbly surfboard leaf give us all a bit of a challenge. Four lighted baseball/softball fields can be used for practices, games, or tournaments.

The Riverwalk Ball Fields and Batting Cages are the perfect places for a family outing or a day with friends. There are many ballfields and batting cages to be enjoyed at Riverwalk Park that are available for both individual and group use.
