Rhyolite Regional Park

Rhyolite Regional Park is a beautiful 54.66-acre park in southern Castle Rock. With many acres of family-friendly trails in a natural habitat, this park is a great place to go and be with nature.

Driving into the parking lot, you will be greeted by a bird singing from the top of a tree. There are also beautiful flowers erupting all around. Before you enter the park, you can see the top of the playground peeking out over the trees. It helps to build some anticipation. Interpretive signs can be read on the way telling us about rhyolite and how it was formed by volcanic ash, magma, pumice, glass, and rocks traveling more than 100 miles per hour from 100 miles away. The mining of it helped finance the town until the mine closed in 1998. It’s fascinating and something you would not have known about without these panels.

Rhyolite Regional Park also has top-notch amenities. It has indoor restrooms which are seasonal, as well as portable outlets. The park is also ADA-accessible and stroller-friendly. There is a pavilion that can be rented for events and plenty of picnic tables. Additionally, the park offers grills, a playground, horseshoe pits, and volleyball courts. There is also an amphitheater that is perfect for group events or presentations.

The outer part of the Playset looks like it is for younger kids. There is a bus stop bench, many steering wheels, and multiple manipulative play panels. Once you cross the bridge, the features are better for older kids. You will find many different ladders, slides, a climbing wall, and an area that looks like a treehouse. Climbing up the ladder to the top can be intimidating for little ones, but it’s a gorgeous view for those who can talk themselves into it. You can even lean out over the playground if you dare. Sliding down the long tunnel slide is a fun reward for your braveness.

In addition to the playset in this park located in Castle Rock, Colorado, there is also a rope jungle gym, merry-go-round, and a teeter-totter. There are lighted tennis and basketball courts and a lighted multi-use soccer and baseball field. You can fly remote control airplanes and kites here and then run out some energy playing tag on these fields. There is also the Rhyolite Cyclocross Course. These hilly flow trails give you an exciting bike ride with a gorgeous view. Past the Cyclocross Course, you can find access to trails that wind up the side of the mountain. These trails are primarily for older children and adult hikers.

One of the best features of this regional park is the miles of trails that are available for exploration. There are 13 miles of trails in total, with something for everyone. There are paved trails for those who want an easy walk or bike ride. These are great for families with small children or people who are looking for an accessible route. For those who want a little more adventure, there are also unpaved trails that take you off the beaten path and into nature. These trails are great for exploring, bird watching, or just enjoying the quiet. All in all, Rhyolite Regional Park is an excellent place to take the family for a day outside. With plenty of amenities and things to do, everyone is sure to have a great time. So come on down and enjoy all that this park has to offer.
